Polk in the Eye
Purchased this from Amazon in May 2010 - after much debate and research. (thanks a ton for the customer service Amazon).
Out of the box, I recognized it for what it is... cheesy, poorly built and lacking any aesthetic appeal. The packaging weighed more than the unit and speaker.
I decided to give it a shot anyway - figuring that all these "experts" and customers couldn't be all wrong.
Easy set up. Love not having wires... the main reason for this purchase.
Connected it to my external Onkyo sub and was quite pleased with the sound while playing music.
Home theater? bah. No way. I fully recognized it wasn't going to take the place of 2.1 or 5.1 Surround but this was flat, lifeless, and contained no sound dispersion. Effects? The effect I got was sitting in front of a single speaker.
But - I'm not the kinda guy who returns stuff just because I make a bad purchasing decision, so I kept it and used it.
A month later while watching an NBA conference finals game - the sound simply cut out. Gone. Kaput.
The display reads dimly lit LEDs "VOLUME 00" - so I think it somehow re-set itself. Turn up the volume! Nope. Can't. Remote doesn't work. OK - try to do it manually. Nope. Can't. No response. Try other settings manually. Nope. No response. VOLUME 00.
OK... cycle power. Nope. The unit itself is smokin' hot to the touch. Try another outlet (brown-out perhaps?) Nope. Give up and use the TV sound. Come back the next day to give it a shot... see if perhaps it re-set itself. Nope. Cycle power. Nope. Change outlet. Nope. Disconnect everything and try again. Nope. Disconnect and try again. Nope. (you get the picture.)
So - I go online and get in touch with Polk (yes, I did register for warranty) Just like their product... no response. Call. Put on hold for 15 minutes. Email. No response.
Now, it's Amazon's turn... I look at their return policy - my ability to return it expired 2 days prior! Send an email to Amazon. Get a response! "Sorry... blah, blah, blah... contact Polk". Gee... I should have thought of that!
To make a long story longer... I eat the damned price of this fine electronic appliance and vow to never do business with Amazon or Polk again. Caveat Emptor!

BEWARE!
Received unit yesterday - returned it to Amazon today - DEFECTIVE.
If I could rate this experience ZERO STARS, I would.
I spent several hours yesterday connecting (and disconnecting) the unit.
I bought this unit to improve the sound of the TV primarily. After hooking it up it appeared to work OK - for a FEW MINUTES. Then the sound cut out. After cycling the power the sound returned - and again cut out after a few minutes. I tried it with the included Polk DVD console - same problem. I quickly tried the AM/FM tuner in the console which appeared to function normally (I didn't leave it on long, just long enough to check the audio cut out whenever a video signal was present) - the radio appeared to be OK. There was a significant delay in switching sources (necessary for my setup because of the lack of an HDMI input) and lots of annoying audible popping when switching sources. I had to recycle the power several times during setup because the unit hung and would not respond to the remote control. These may be related to the fact that the Console was defective, I have no way of knowing without a comparison unit.
I called Polk Support; immediately after I explained the problem the Polk Support guy advised an return to the vendor (with such an immediate reaction my guess is that they've heard this one before). After a little digging he gave it as his opinion that an internal processor in the DVD console was malfunctioning. No offer from Polk to replace the console.
I filed a return request with Amazon - they had no replacement system and gave me an airy-fairy response to take it to USPS for return (no offer of scheduling a UPS pick up which would have been much cheaper for Amazon and less hassle for me).
All-in-all BLACK MARKS all round, for Polk (equipment) and for Amazon (shipping/return).
I get the impression that Polk is or will soon discontinue this system, that they're dumping them on the market and are not willing to provide support (or, maybe, this is their normal support mode - point the finger at the other guy). Amazon appears to have picked some of them up which might be a good deal for customers if the units worked.
As far as the unit itself goes the sound is adequate (a little bit of additional "presence" but definitely NOT surround sound). Volume is also adequate for a small room. Polk was late to market with this unit and using already antiquated components (DVD instead of Blu-Ray, no HDMI inputs) and way overpriced at MSRP.
You'd be well advised to wait for the next generation (if you insist on a Polk) or look elsewhere for something cheaper, and less complex.

Save your money...
Sorry...I just don't understand why ANYBODY likes this piece of junk.
POOR sound, All of the volume complaints are right on. Difficult to hook up
using a Samsung Big Screen. The sound quality was worse than my 10yr old Bose set up
and I couldn't ever get enough volume for "Surround" sound. Kept it for a couple of months and gave it away when the Yamaha was delivered. SAVE the box to return it if
you do give it a try.
